The Wife’s Tale – Lori Lansens

This is Lori Lansens follow up novel to the hugely successful ‘The Girls’. It is set in the same town and references some of her earlier characters, giving a sense of continuity but can also be read as a standalone book.

It is the eve of Mary and Jimmy Gooch’s silver wedding anniversary and Mary is waiting for Jimmy to return home from work. Mary and Jimmy have arranged to go out for dinner the following evening with two other couples and Jimmy is worried that their friends may choose the more expensive items from the menu as the Gooch’s don’t have much spare money.

Jimmy doesn’t return home and Mary is forced to look for him, she is astounded to find that they have a large amount of unexplained money in their bank account. She hasn’t ever shown much interest in Jimmy’s job, and had never phoned him at work. Jimmy had a keen interest in international affairs and wanted to travel but Mary has never wanted to leave their hometown, she ignored Jimmy when he read her interesting stories from the newspapers and she refused to watch the news programmes on the television, now with Jimmy gone she has to face her fears of the outside world, drive on unfamiliar roads, catch an aeroplane and approach strangers.

Mary is a large woman who has issues with overeating, she has problems finding clothes to fit but is a sensual lady with a kind heart who tries to help others. Throughout her journey she meets people who wish to help and befriend her, although sometimes I found some scenarios a little too convenient.

As Mary’s journey continues and her story unfolds we discover how a now overweight and introverted lady managed to catch the eye of the local sport scholarship heartthrob and marry him. She believes their marriage was built on a secret known only to her and when she finds that the extended family including Jimmy have known this ‘secret’ all along her world is tipped on its axis and now she has to re-consider the grounds that their relationship was built on.

This is the story of someone finding the courage to change their life, it is a physical as well as a mental journey, Lansens has created a very sympathetic character who is easy to identify with.

This story stayed with me for weeks after I’d finished reading the novel, I wondered what else life could throw at Mary and if her newly built character would hold up to the challenges presented by the final dilemma.

Whereas ‘The Girls’ was a difficult subject, co-joined twins are not an everyday occurrence ‘The Wife’s Tale’ is more accessible, an abandoned wife who wants to know why her husband has left her, and is willing to turn her life upside down in her search for the answers is something a lot of people can identify with.
