  • Horror of what the summer months could bring for thousands of girls in the UK

Female circumcision or "cutting" is usually referred to as female genital mutilation, done to conform to cultural or religious traditions or beliefs.

Female genitals is removed in a ceremony.
The girls are very young and the procedure is often perfomed without anaesthesia.

It is estimated that it will be inflicted on up to 2,000 British schoolgirls during the summer holidays – leaving brutal physical and emotional scars. Yet there have been no prosecutions against the practice.

Cutters are now coming into the UK and often paid to
cut several girls at a time.

    Key facts

Female genital mutilation (FGM) includes procedures that intentionally alter or injure female genital organs for non-medical reasons.

The procedure has no health benefits for girls and women.

Procedures can cause severe bleeding, problems urinating, and later, potential childbirth complications and newborn deaths.

An estimated 100 to 140 million girls and women worldwide are currently living with the consequences of FGM.

It is mostly carried out on young girls sometime between infancy and age 15 years.

In Africa an estimated 92 million girls from 10 years of age and above have undergone FGM.

FGM is internationally recognized as a violation of the human rights of girls and women.
