  • THE GREAT BIG SCOTTISH SONGBOOK

    EMI TV
    5 x CD
    Release date: 26.05.2008

A quick glance through the extensive tracklist on this epic 5cd set reveals the depth and quality exhibited by the scottish music canon. From folk to rock, punk to soul... and with a wee splash of traditional/ bagpipes too, this mammoth collection is the perfect soundtrack to a night in with a few friends and a ottle of single malt. Never short on toe-tapping, singalong & epic tracks, this would make a great album for dear old dad on fathers day too.

The names are as familiar as they are successful - and there’s no better place to start than the born again proclaimers, with an impressive 7 tracks over the 5 cd’s - ‘i'm gonna be (500 miles)’, ‘sunshine on leith’, ‘make my heart fly’, ‘i’m on my way’, ‘what makes you cry’ & ’letter from america’. current belle of the ball, kt tunstall, contributes ‘suddenly i see’ & ‘black horse and cherry tree’... the very great waterboys offer two perfect 80’s classics - ‘fishermans blues’ & ‘whole of the moon’. big jim kerr & the simple minds feature heavily with fantastic songs such as ’alive and kicking’, ‘don’t you forget about me’, ‘belfast child’, ‘sanctify yourself’ & ‘promised you a miracle’. every one a solid gold stadium anthem.

There’s the subtle soulful sounds from the vastly underrated blue nile ’tinseltown’, saturday night’, plus danny wilson with the lovely ’mary’s prayer’ & hue and cry with the fab ’labour of love’. add on the likes of gerry rafferty (the sublme’baker street’), scots heroes runrig, midge ure, the corries, pilot, marillion, jethro tull &of course, andy stewart & a very healthy picture of the scots scene emerges.

That still leaves room for some fascinating yet almost currently unknown artists such as robert wilson, who was scotlands equivalent of frank sinatra in his day, creating hysteria and selling out theatres in the 1930’s & 40’s... and of course there are bagpipes from the royal scots guards, the royal scots dragoon guards (currently charting in america!) & ‘auld lang syne’ by the glasgow pheonix choir. there’s something for everyone, especially dad!
