Many sanitary pads and tampons are not simply made from cotton wool as one might think, but contain plastic, synthetic fibres, chlorine bleaching residuals, such as dioxin, and biodegradable materials.
Research undertaken of behalf of natural sanitary range, Natracare, has uncovered how women feel about these ingredients.
The research was undertaken with British mums and most are concerned by the content of the sanitary products that fill many shelves. Chlorine bleaching residuals came out at the biggest worry. More than half of mums were also concerned about pesticides, synthetic materials or dyes.

Not only are women concerned for themselves, for 89 per cent of mums also help their daughters choose which sanitary protection to wear. Other sources of guidance for girls include teachers, friends, older sisters and other female relatives.
