  • Top Female Role Models

Taking a long, hard and objective look at the world around us today we can see plenty of celebrities and famous women in the media whose behaviour is as far removed from being a role model to the younger generation of young girls, teenagers and young women as can be. People like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus have all shown us that drinking, taking drugs and acting in both uncouth and unladylike fashions while being in the paparazzi spotlight is all you need to become famous.

This is absorbed by the younger generation and seen as the norm via the medium of TV and print media through shows like Jersey Shore and celebrity magazines. However, despite the failings of these media starlets there are still plenty of excellent role models out there for people to aspire to and my top female role models, both real and fictional, are listed below.
    Emma Watson
The 24 year old actress who shot to fame by the portrayal of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies at the age of eight is someone who has not let her massive fame go to her head. She is adored by many people, not just fans of the Harry Potter series, all around the world and despite the vast amount of money she has earned her feet are still firmly affixed to the ground.

Money was in short supply as a child with birthday and Christmas presents being school related, with books and uniforms often provided, and these sacrifices have not gone in vain. She has gone to university, with Brown in Rhode Island her chosen location, and May 2014 will see her graduate. The determination to receive an education and better herself despite having enough money to set herself up for life is something that we should all aim to do and this puts Emma Watson on the list.
    Malala Yousafzai
The young Pakistani schoolgirl who is famous for advocating women's and education rights in her homeland, specifically Swat Valley where the Taliban had banned girls from attending school. She wrote a blog for the BBC aged 11 and in 2010 she gave TV and print interviews and was nominated by Archbishop Desmond Tutu for the International Children's Peace Prize.

For standing up for her beliefs and pushing for rights for women and girls, Malala was shot in the face three times in 2012 by the Taliban. Amazingly she survived and despite further announcements from the Taliban that they would try the same again she has continued to denounce the Taliban and their banning of women's rights from her new home in Birmingham, UK. She has been twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and was on the front cover of Time magazine as she was listed as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world. For standing up for what she believes in and is right despite the risk to her own life, the teenager is the perfect role model for each and every person on the planet.
    Danica Patrick
Motor racing is a male dominated sport and it is something that, historically, that women have failed to do well at on both sides of the Atlantic. However, Patrick has been racing in the Indycar and NASCAR series' in America since 2005 and not only just racing she has won a race as well. She claimed victory in Japan in 2008 and also claimed a podium position at the most famous Indycar race of them all - the Indy 500 in 2009.

She is one of the most famous drivers in the US at this time and her involvement and outstanding form has seen a massive increase in female drivers all over the world, with Susie Wolff in Formula One getting a test driver role with Williams this season the most famous case. Danica makes this list for following her dreams and showing that anyone can succeed in the most male dominated of areas.
    Lara Croft
The one person on this list that is fictional is star of numerous games, films, comics and even online slot games Tomb Raider: Secret of the Sword - Lara Croft is not only a female role model she is someone that inspired a generation of strong video game lead characters. Croft was one of the first video game characters to be the focal point of an entire game and she did so in an Indiana Jones type of way as she travelled around locating rare artefacts and battling bad guys.

Not only did the success of the Tomb Raider game ensure sequels across many formats, but many more female lead games and her place on the list comes from the fact that she has completed changed the perceptions of female game characters and female gamers around the world. Although fictional, she represents a massive step forward for female games and gamers.
